Founder, Iron Yard
I've watched the same pattern play out dozens of times.
A founder builds something people want. Early deals close on energy and conviction. Revenue starts climbing. Then things get harder in ways that are difficult to name and growth stalls. Deals take longer. The pipeline feels full but nothing's moving. A new rep joins and can't seem to close without the founder in the room. The board wants a forecast and the honest answer is "I'm not sure."
None of this happens because the founder isn't smart enough or isn't working hard enough. It happens because the thing that got them here — doing everything themselves, trusting their gut, staying close to every deal — is the same thing that's now holding them back.
I spent years as an EMEA VP of Sales at Salesforce, then left to work directly with B2B SaaS startups and scaleups. Not as an advisor who shows up once a month with a slide deck, but embedded — inside the pipeline, inside the deals, inside the hiring decisions. My goal was simple: help founders build revenue engines that don't depend on the founder being in every deal.
Working that closely with dozens of companies, I started seeing a clear pattern. The best founders weren't working harder than everyone else. They were protecting their focus ruthlessly. They qualified out bad deals early instead of chasing everything that moved. They built a sales motion that worked even when they weren't watching.
The gap between good and great wasn't effort. It was discipline and clarity — and most founders didn't have a tool that helped them see the difference in real time.
About two years ago I stopped asking "how do I help more founders one at a time?" and started asking "how do I turn what the great companies do into software that any founder can use?"
Iron Yard is the answer to that question.
CRM is essential. Every serious company needs one. It gives you visibility, history, and accountability. It tells you what happened.
But CRM on its own will not get you where you want to go.
At its core, a CRM is a system of record. It captures activity, stores data, and reports on outcomes after the fact. What it does not do is drive behaviour, sharpen focus, or tell your team what to do next to win. Too often, founders end up with immaculate data and inconsistent results.
It takes the data you already have and uses it to guide decisions in real time: which deals are winnable, where risk is building, what actions will increase velocity, and where effort is being wasted. It moves sales from passive reporting to active execution.
Iron Yard is built around four principles that consistently separate struggling teams from enduring ones
Deals move forward when buyers feel safe, risks are mitigated early, and momentum builds at a pace that creates confidence.
Modern selling is about qualifying out early and doubling down where you can genuinely win.
A structured process and a living playbook outperform gut feel, especially as teams grow.
Velocity gives you levers. It allows you to increase revenue, maintain momentum, and steer the business rather than react to it.
Iron Yard exists to operationalise these principles inside your existing tools. It does not replace your CRM—it unlocks it. The result is not more data, but more control, more consistency, and a clear path from good to great.
